Painting workshop After looking at a range of different painters in the morning lecture I felt strongly inspired and drawn to carry out further research of the following artists: Torey Thornton (playful and great colours) Michael Armitage (intriguing style) and Jessica Stockholder's installations. This gave us an idea for our quick collages we were asked to make in the morning. I felt confident doing this activity. Speed, trying not to overthink, trusting the process, not expecting anything, playing with shapes, colours, textures, relation between objects came easily to me. When I finished all three I was satisfied and was confident I could work with them as a starting point for a painting. I started off on a bit of a wrong foot in the afternoon as I had no paints. Luckily I managed to get some in the material room however I was still missing black and white. I managed to get a few splotches here and there but for some reason it made me feel a but restricted. Also I decided to paint vertically fort he first time so that felt abut uncomfortable at ties as well. I started off painting rather confidently trying to focus on the process and progression instead of coming up with this fixed idea of how the final result should look like. However towards the middle I was starting to feel extremely tired and drained of all energy so my confidents dropped and set doubt took over a bit. I forced myself to finish it off and not to abandon it half way through just because I wanted to prove to myself that it was still worth finishing even though I wasn’t very happy with the way it looked. I hadn’t managed to find the colours I wanted, my composition was a little off and all round it didn’t feel right. I mange to finish in the end and left very shortly after that so I wouldn’t have to look at it and judge it there and then. So when I come back on the 24th, I gave it a glance and one thing rung true: that it had this energy about it. It’s a word one could use for a lot of paintings but regardless of that I welcomed that simple thought.
